Restorative DENTISTRY - FLORENCE

The term Restorative Treatment means any procedure which is aimed at preserving or reconstructing dental tissue. Teeth may deteriorate for various reasons:

  • Tooth decay
  • Wear and tear, for example due to grinding
  • Excessive brushing (collar wear)
  • Traumatic events
  • Excessively chewing hard substances that can lead to various types of dental crown fractures

Teeth decay is an infectious and degenerative disease - which tends to get worse as time passes - it affects the hard tissues of the tooth, i.e. enamel and dentin, destroying them. It is a bacterial infection, and is caused when the balance between the bacterial flora in the oral cavity and the body's defences alter.

As it is a bacteria, this make us mistakenly think that it has nothing to do with our habits, our dental hygiene, or our diet. This is not the case.

Among the main causes, we actually find poor oral hygiene and also eating food which is acidic, fatty and / or rich in refined sugars which do nothing but create the ideal conditions for the development of a cavity which will suddenly get worse.

Another cause of cavities can be caused due to a variance between the upper and lower dental arches, which makes it easier for plaque deposits to build up that are difficult to remove by cleaning ourselves, precisely because of bad teeth positioning.

We can also look at what our saliva is made up of. It is a natural detergent, and can cause bacterial attacks that lead to cavities, when the PH is altered, in some cases, encouraging the spread of a tooth decay-causing bacterial flora.

The objective of Restorative Treatment is any procedure that is aimed at the repair / restructuring of a tooth that is partially compromised. In summary, these are treatments could be either "fillings" or " reconstructions” that have been added to the services offered by more stylish and sophisticated dental practices which are also interested in the aesthetic look, inlays and veneers.

  • WHAT ARE FILLINGS?

This is one of the most common dental procedures. Historically done using silver amalgam, today they are made exclusively with composite resins that now have aesthetic and functional features so that they can rightly be considered the best material for reconstructing weakened teeth. By using the correct methods and haveing the right skills and materials, we are able to obtain excellent results, making it practically impossible to distinguish a treated tooth from an untreated one.

  • WHAT IS AN INLAY?

A dental inlay is also known as an indirect restoration. It is an element that is in the field of dental aesthetics to treat the teeth in the back of the mouth (molars and bicuspids) when the dental cavities are too deep or following a major trauma when it is not possible to cure the tooth with a simple composite filling.

This type of filling ensure great protection for the back teeth which have to deal with high levels of chewing compared to the front teeth (canines and incisors). As opposed to the composite fillings, which are made directly by the dentist at their practice, the inlays are made by a dental technician in a laboratory, which is why they can be seen as being an indirect restoration.

Whilst waiting for the inlay to be made, the dentist and put in a temporary filling which will later be removed.

In the lab, the specialised dental technicians pay incredible attention when making the missing pieces so that they fit perfectly into the hole of the tooth. The dentist will then check the work and will fine-tune the tooth so that any imperfect fillings will be made perfect.

This is a little like a crown, and can be made using different materials such as metal alloys, resins, composites and ceramics.

Ceramic is definitely one of the most recommended materials as it is not harmful or toxic, it is long-lasting and is very similar to natural teeth.

  • WHAT ARE AESTHETIC VENEERS?

This is definitely one of the most fascinating and bests looking treatments in the field of restorative dentistry.

It is a thin ceramic layer (or composite resin), made in a dental laboratory and cemented onto the teeth which have been well prepared by the dentist. By using this procedure, we are able to give our patients the best look possible with minimal work on the teeth themselves.

The veneers are a good option to hide any defeats in shape, teeth positioning, and improve any enamel discolourisation.

There are different widths, specific types of materails and are made depending on the problem that needs to be solved. They are usually made from either ceramic or porcelain, because these materials are very resistant, but they can also be made using composites.

Each and every veneer is made-to-measure according to the dimensions of the tooth. They are made in a laboratory using precise imprints from the dentist.
